Rich Born has had a strong interest in photography that began during his childhood days. He remembers well, as a six-year-old lad in the early 1950’s, sitting in the basement darkroom with his dad, who developed black-and-white film and prints, as well as color slides. Rich’s first camera was a little box camera, but when he was in junior high school, his dad got him his first 35mm film camera—a Graflex—such a treasure that was.
He works with digital cameras now, but does very little post-processing of images in Photoshop. Rich says, “I try to capture as much as possible in camera, from selection of the appropriate lens and filters for a given situation, to composing the image in the viewfinder.” Rich especially enjoys creating botanical images, particularly macros, by use of soft, selective focus lenses, such as those in the Lensbaby product line. In addition to the traditional framed and matted images, Rich also has images printed translucently on glass as well as high gloss standouts on a metallic surface. Most recently, Rich has taken up the art of scanography.
Rich has displayed his work in shows at the Norris Gallery in St. Charles and has participated in numerous juried shows at The Next Picture Show in Dixon.
